# Pay drivers by ELD miles

> Pay drivers on the miles their truck's odometer actually recorded instead of dispatch miles, using the ELD Empty, Loaded, and Total Mileage rate types.

<Note>
  📋 **Module:** Accounting > Driver Settlements
</Note>

<Tip>
  💡 If you are new to Driver Settlements, read the [Driver Settlements](/en/help/accounting-settlements/driver-settlements) article first, and the [Driver Rates, Rules & Plans guide](/en/help/accounting-settlements/driver-rates-rules-plans-the-complete-guidex) for how rate types and tiers work.
</Tip>

## Overview

ELD mileage pay lets you pay drivers on the miles the truck's odometer actually recorded, rather than on the dispatch miles calculated when the load was planned. The two numbers often differ: detours, reroutes, fuel stops, and out-of-route driving all show up on the odometer but not in the planned mileage.

There are three ELD mileage rate types. They are tiered the same way as the dispatch mileage rates you already use, so the tier bands and the **Use Highest Tier** checkbox behave exactly as they do on Loaded Miles and Empty Miles.

| Rate type | What it measures |
| - | - |
| **ELD Empty Mileage Rate** | Dispatch to the first pickup |
| **ELD Loaded Mileage Rate** | First pickup to the last delivery |
| **ELD Total Mileage Rate** | Dispatch to the last delivery |

<Note>
  ELD mileage pay is turned on per company. If you do not see the setting described below, contact Alvys support to have it enabled for your account.
</Note>

## Supported ELD providers

ELD mileage pay works only with providers that send odometer readings to Alvys:

* Samsara
* Motive
* Omnitracs
* Verizon Connect
* Monarch Tracking
* KeepTruckin
* TrackEnsure
* OneStepGPS
* FleetLocate
* RoadStar
* MasterELD
* Isaac

<Warning>
  **GeoTab is not supported for ELD mileage pay.** GeoTab connects to Alvys for other telematics features, but it is not available as a source for ELD mileage rates today. Trucks on GeoTab need to be paid using the standard dispatch mileage rate types.
</Warning>

If your trucks are on a provider that is not in this list, use the standard **Loaded Miles** and **Empty Miles** rate types instead.

## Before you start

* ELD mileage pay must be enabled for your company. Contact Alvys support if the setting is not available.
* Your trucks must be connected to a supported ELD. See the integration article for your provider, such as [Samsara](/en/help/integrations/connecting-samsara-to-alvys) or [Motive](/en/help/integrations/motive-eld-telematics-integration).
* Adding and editing rates requires the **View Pay Plans** and **Edit Pay Plans** permissions. Generating settlements requires the **Pay Driver** permission. Contact your Alvys Admin if any action is unavailable.

## Turn on ELD miles in Driver Settlement Settings

Turning the setting on is what makes the ELD mileage values visible on the load, so do this before you add rates.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Driver Settlement Settings">
    Go to **Accounting > Driver Settlements** and open the settlement settings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enable ELD mileage">
    Turn on the ELD mileage setting and save.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm it on a load">
    Open a recently delivered load and check the Money Box. The ELD miles appear next to the paid empty and loaded miles.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Add ELD mileage rates to a driver

A driver is only paid on ELD miles once one of the three ELD rate types is on their profile. Turning the setting on by itself makes the miles visible; it does not change anyone's pay.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the driver profile">
    Go to **Drivers** and select the driver you want to configure.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Go to the Rates section">
    Scroll to the **Rates** section on the driver profile.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the rate">
    Click **Add Rate** and choose **ELD Empty Mileage Rate**, **ELD Loaded Mileage Rate**, or **ELD Total Mileage Rate**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the rate">
    Enter a single per-mile amount, or configure tiers the same way you would on a dispatch mileage rate. Set the **Use Highest Tier** checkbox if you want the whole trip paid at the single matching tier rather than stepped through the bands.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save**. The rate appears in the Rates section and applies to trips going forward.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Adding an ELD mileage rate alongside the equivalent dispatch mileage rate will pay the driver for both. Decide which basis a driver is paid on and configure only that one, unless you deliberately want two separate line items.
</Warning>

## How Alvys measures ELD miles

Shortly after a trip finishes, Alvys reads the truck's odometer at dispatch and at each stop, then works out the mileage for each leg.

Every leg is graded **High**, **Medium**, or **Low** confidence. When a leg is anything other than High, the grade and the reason appear on the driver's line item, so you can see why a number looks the way it does instead of having to guess.

If a leg cannot be measured at all — for example, the ELD sent no odometer readings for that stretch — the line still appears on the driver's statement at \$0, with the reason shown. Unmeasurable legs are never silently dropped, so a missing number is always visible rather than quietly rolled into the total.

ELD line items post under the same payroll earning codes as their dispatch equivalents, so your payroll export and accounting sync need no additional mapping.

## Where ELD miles appear

* **On the load:** in the trip's Money Box, next to the paid empty and loaded miles.
* **On the driver's statement:** as line items, with the confidence grade and reason shown when a leg is not High confidence.

## Troubleshooting

### The ELD mileage setting is not available

ELD mileage pay is enabled per company. Contact Alvys support to have it turned on for your account.

### ELD miles are not showing on a load

1. Confirm the truck is connected to a supported ELD. GeoTab does not supply odometer readings for this feature.
2. Confirm the trip has finished. ELD miles are calculated shortly after the trip completes, not while it is in progress.
3. Confirm the ELD mileage setting is turned on in Driver Settlement Settings.

### A driver's ELD line item shows \$0

The leg could not be measured — most often because the ELD sent no odometer readings for that stretch. The reason appears on the line item itself. Contact Alvys support if the reason is unclear or if you believe the readings should have been available.

### The ELD miles on a trip look wrong

Contact Alvys support to have the trip's ELD miles recalculated. A trip can be recalculated up until the driver has been paid on it, so raise it before the statement is finalized.

## FAQs

**Q:** Will turning on the setting change what my drivers get paid?

**A:** No. The setting only makes the ELD miles visible on the load. A driver's pay changes only once you add one of the three ELD mileage rate types to their profile.

**Q:** Can I pay one driver on ELD miles and another on dispatch miles?

**A:** Yes. The rate types are configured per driver, so you can move drivers across one at a time.

**Q:** Can ELD miles be recalculated after a driver has been paid?

**A:** No. A trip can be recalculated only up until the driver has been paid on it. After that the figure is locked.

**Q:** Do ELD mileage rates support tiers?

**A:** Yes. They are tiered the same way as the dispatch mileage rates, including the **Use Highest Tier** checkbox.

**Q:** My trucks are on GeoTab. Can I use this?

**A:** Not today. GeoTab is not a supported source for ELD mileage pay. Use the standard **Loaded Miles** and **Empty Miles** rate types instead.
