# Status column (Drivers/Assets table)

> What the driver Status column in Dispatch Planner v2 shows, how Open, Covered, Dispatched, and Unavailable are decided, and why a driver can show a status you did not expect.

Part of the [Dispatch Planner column reference](/en/help/loads-trips/dispatch-planner-columns).

The **Status** column tells you whether a driver can take new work right now. Each driver shows one of four statuses: **Open**, **Covered**, **Dispatched**, or **Unavailable**. Use it to find drivers who are free to cover a trip without opening each driver's activity.

## At a glance

| | |
| - | - |
| **Table** | Drivers/Assets |
| **Shown by default** | Yes. The column is pinned to the left of the table. |
| **Sort** | Yes |
| **Filter** | Pick one or more statuses from a list |
| **Who sees it** | Everyone who can open Dispatch Planner v2 |
| **Edit in the grid** | No. The status updates on its own as trips and driver events change. |

## What does each status mean?

| Status | Badge | Meaning |
| - | - | - |
| **Open** | Red | The driver has no covered or dispatched trip and no driver event happening right now. The driver is free to take a trip. |
| **Covered** | Yellow | The driver is assigned to a trip that is **Covered** but not yet dispatched. |
| **Dispatched** | Blue | The driver is on a trip that is **Dispatched** or **In Transit**. |
| **Unavailable** | Gray | The driver has a driver event happening right now, such as Vacation, Hometime, or Sick or Emergency. |

## How is the status decided?

The planner checks the driver in this order and shows the first status that applies:

1. **Unavailable** if a driver event has started and has not ended yet.
2. **Dispatched** if the driver has a trip in **Dispatched** or **In Transit** status.
3. **Covered** if the driver has a trip in **Covered** status.
4. **Open** if none of the above applies.

Because the checks run in this order, a driver event wins over a trip. A driver who is in transit but also has an active Hometime event shows **Unavailable**.

The status changes on its own. When a driver event ends, the driver moves back to the status their trips call for, without anyone editing the driver.

## Why does a driver show a status I did not expect?

**A driver event without an address does not count.** The planner only treats a driver as Unavailable when the event has an address. If you add Vacation or Hometime with no address, the driver keeps showing Open, Covered, or Dispatched. Add an address to the event so the planner picks it up. See [How to add driver and asset events](/en/help/assets-fleet/how-to-add-driver-and-asset-events).

**Future events do not count yet.** A driver with time off starting tomorrow still shows **Open** today. The status changes to Unavailable when the event starts. To plan around upcoming time off, check the **Next planned event** column.

**Trip dates do not matter.** Any trip in **Covered** status makes the driver Covered, even if that trip picks up weeks from now. A trip that was never moved past **Dispatched** or **In Transit** keeps the driver Dispatched until the trip's status changes.

**Only the first driver on a team counts.** For a two-driver team, the status follows Driver 1, the first name in the **Driver(s)** column. Driver 2's trips and events do not change the team's status.

**A trip only counts when the driver is that trip's Driver 1.** If a driver is assigned to a Covered or Dispatched trip as Driver 2, that trip does not change their status, and they can still show **Open**.
