# Empty Dispatch Mileage column (Trips table)

> What the Empty Dispatch Mileage column in Dispatch Planner v2 shows, where the deadhead distance is measured from, and why an open trip usually shows 0 mi.

Part of the [Dispatch Planner column reference](/en/help/loads-trips/dispatch-planner-columns).

The **Empty Dispatch Mileage** column shows the empty miles, also called deadhead, that each trip's driver is paid on, for example **45 mi**. It is the empty half of the trip's dispatch mileage, the figure driver settlements use. Use it to compare how far trucks run empty to reach their loads.

## At a glance

| | |
| - | - |
| **Table** | Trips |
| **Shown by default** | No. Add it from the Trips table column configuration menu. |
| **Sort** | Yes |
| **Filter** | Enter a number or range |
| **Who sees it** | Everyone who can open Dispatch Planner v2 |
| **Edit in the grid** | No |

## How is it worked out?

The value adds up two distances, shown in whole miles:

1. **From the trip's previous stop to its first stop.** When a truck is assigned, Alvys sets the trip's previous stop from the truck's last trip: the last stop of that trip, or its first stop if that trip was marked TONU. If someone edits the previous stop, the distance is recalculated.
2. **Empty driving on the trip itself.** Any distance before the trip's first pickup or after its last delivery, such as a leg to or from a waypoint, counts as empty.

Once a driver on the trip has been paid, recalculations no longer change this column. If you edit empty miles on the trip from driver settlements, only this column changes.

The filter starts on **Less than or equal to**, so entering **50** keeps trips with 50 empty miles or less.

## Why does an open trip show 0 mi?

**No truck is assigned yet.** Until a truck is assigned, the trip has no previous stop to measure from, so that part of the distance counts as zero. Most **Open** trips show **0 mi**, or only the empty driving on the trip itself. The value fills in when a truck is assigned.

**The truck is already at the pickup.** If the previous stop and the first stop are at the same place, **0 mi** is the real distance.

## Why is the column blank?

No dispatch mileage has been worked out for the trip yet. Trips with a dash stay at the bottom whichever way you sort.
