# Last Ping column (Trips table)

> What the Last Ping column in the Dispatch Planner v2 Trips table shows, which of the trip's assets the position comes from, and how to filter trips by where they last reported.

Part of the [Dispatch Planner column reference](/en/help/loads-trips/dispatch-planner-columns).

The **Last Ping** column shows the city and state where the trip's equipment or drivers last reported a position, for example **Dallas, TX**. Use it to see roughly where a trip is right now, or to find trips near a place.

## At a glance

| | |
| - | - |
| **Table** | Trips |
| **Shown by default** | Yes |
| **Sort** | Yes. Trips sort by state, then by city within each state. |
| **Filter** | Type text to match, or pick a place and a radius |
| **Who sees it** | Everyone who can open Dispatch Planner v2 |
| **Edit in the grid** | No |

## Where does the position come from?

The planner looks at every asset on the trip: Driver 1, Driver 2, the truck, and the trailer. It shows the position that any of them reported most recently. A position only counts if it has a city or a state.

The column shows the place only, not the time. There is no age limit, so a position reported weeks ago still shows if none of the trip's assets has reported since. To see how long ago the trip's assets last reported, open the trip sidebar, which shows the last known location with the time since it was reported.

The Drivers/Assets table has its own **Last Ping** column, which works out a driver's position differently. See [Last Ping column (Drivers/Assets table)](/en/help/loads-trips/dispatch-planner-columns/drivers/last-ping).

## How do I filter by last ping?

The filter offers two ways to match, and you can use both at once. When both are set, a trip has to match both.

* **Text**: type part of a city or state in the **Search last ping location** box, such as **Dallas**, **TX**, or **Dallas TX**.
* **Place and radius**: search for a place, then pick **25 miles**, **50 miles**, **100 miles**, **250 miles**, or **500 miles**. The radius starts at 100 miles. Trips whose last ping is within that distance in a straight line match, not by road.

## Why does a trip show a value I did not expect?

**The column is blank.** The trip has no driver, truck, or trailer assigned, or none of them has reported a position with a city or state.

**The place belongs to a different asset than I expected.** Whichever asset on the trip reported most recently wins. If the trailer reported after the truck, the column shows where the trailer is.

**Sorting is by place, not by time.** Trips are ordered alphabetically by the state and city of the last ping, not by how recent it is. Trips with no last ping always sort to the end.

**Typing the comma finds nothing.** The cell shows **Dallas, TX**, but the text search compares the city and state separated by a space. Type **Dallas TX**, or just **Dallas**.
