Part of the Dispatch Planner column reference. The Miles to Next Stop column shows the driving distance from where the trip last reported to its next stop, rounded to whole miles, for example 125 mi. Use it to find trips that are close to a pickup or delivery.

At a glance

How is the distance worked out?

  1. The planner takes the most recent position reported by any asset on the trip: Driver 1, Driver 2, the truck, or the trailer. Positions more than 7 days old are ignored.
  2. When that position came in, Alvys calculated the driving distance from there to the next stop, along with the driving time shown in ETA to Next Stop.
  3. The cell shows that distance in miles, rounded to a whole number. 0 mi is a real reading, not a missing value.
Trips with ETAs from Trimble work differently. If the trip’s ETAs come from Trimble, the distance is Trimble’s remaining route distance to the next stop, not counting rest stops Trimble adds to the route. The filter starts on Less than or equal to, so entering 50 keeps trips that are 50 miles or less from their next stop.

Why is the distance blank or not what I expected?

The distance does not update between positions. On a trip without Trimble ETAs, the distance is calculated when a position comes in and stays the same until the next one. If the last position is several hours old, the trip may be much closer than the cell shows. No recent position. On a trip without Trimble ETAs, the cell is blank when the trip has no driver, truck, or trailer assigned, or when none of them has reported a position with a city or state in the last 7 days. The Last Ping column has no age limit, so it can show a place while this column is blank. No route to the next stop. The cell is blank when the position could not be matched to a next stop, or when the distance could not be calculated. The distance can belong to another trip. Each position is tied to one trip the asset is on when it reports. If a trip is Covered and its driver is still running an earlier trip, the distance can be to that earlier trip’s next stop.
