Part of the Dispatch Planner column reference. The Rate Per Mile column shows what each trip is worth for every mile the truck drives on it, counting both loaded and empty miles. Use it to compare how well open trips pay for the miles they take, without working it out by hand.

At a glance

How is the rate per mile worked out?

Rate Per Mile is the trip’s Trip Value divided by its loaded miles plus its empty miles.
  • Loaded miles are the figure shown in Total Miles.
  • Empty miles, also called deadhead, are the estimated miles the truck drives empty to reach the trip from where it finished its previous trip. If someone edits the trip’s empty miles, the edited figure is used.
For example, a trip worth 2,000with450loadedmilesand50emptymilesshows2,000 with 450 loaded miles and 50 empty miles shows 4.00. Rate Per Mile uses the trip value, not the Carrier Line Haul. It tells you what the trip is worth per mile, not what you pay the carrier per mile. Rate Per Mile uses Total Miles, not Loaded Dispatch Mileage. If only the trip’s paid loaded miles were changed, Rate Per Mile does not follow that change.

Why is the column blank?

The trip value is $0.00. With no trip value there is nothing to divide, so the cell shows a dash. Total Miles is blank. Without loaded miles the planner cannot work out a rate. The trip has no empty miles yet. A trip gets an empty-miles figure when a carrier is assigned to it or when someone enters its empty miles. Until then, Rate Per Mile stays blank, even when Total Miles has a value. The miles add up to zero. A trip with no loaded and no empty miles has no rate per mile. You cannot see carrier rates. If you have neither the View Carrier Rate permission nor the Billing permission, and your role is not Admin, Partner Admin, Office Admin, or Biller, the column is not offered in the column configuration menu at all. See Rates Permissions.
